If you are on this site, I am assuming you know what a camp host is and does. You live for free in a state or federal campground and in return you volunteer 20 hours of service. It’s mostly clearing trails, cleaning fire pits, stacking firewood, planting trees, greeting campers and picking up off the ground anything that shouldn’t be on the ground. The grounds are meticulously groomed, bathrooms are always clean, electricity and water are included, and security is provided by state and federal Rangers.
Your tax dollars at work.
It’s a great trade off. The other 148 hours of the week are yours to do with as you please. What pleases me? Reading, painting, writing, campfire cuisine, kayaking, swimming, playing guitar, paddle boarding, biking, hiking. Or sometimes I just lay in my hammock thinking about doing those things instead. It’s a pretty sweet life.
I own no property, I have no debts and my children are grown and gone. In April I began my first camp host gig at Pokomoke River State Park on Maryland’s Eastern shore. I am here until September and then bound for the next gig. I’m thinking South Carolina for the winter.
I have decided this is the life for me. I feel free. I can breathe. I haven’t been in a hurry since I got here. I don’t have a television. And I carry with me all the books I always told myself I would read someday.
I will do this for as long as I am physically able. There’s only one thing missing in this paradise found. I’m guessing you know where I’m going with this: A partner to share this life with would amaze me. I have spent the last several months waiting for a woodland goddess to step out of the forest one day and take me by the hand and whisper: Come with me, I will show you things you’ve never seen before.
But that hasn’t happened. So here I am.
So maybe you’re thinking: Wait a minute, you want me to drop everything in my life and join your caravan of one down the highway to rivers, waterfalls, beaches and forests unknown. And then you expect me to fall in love with you?
Response: If all of that happened, then Yay Me! More realistically, just check things out. Come visit for a night, a weekend, a week, see how it feels. I have several tents and a camping van, enough room and privacy for you or any companions you’d like to bring along for a test ride. Or I could give you a zoom tour!
You don’t have to buy into this idea full-time. Come and go as you please - days, weeks at a time. I’m just looking for someone congenial and compatible to spend some time with, laughing at how we are getting over, off the grid, on the beach, in the woods, away from traffic, static and breaking news. At the cost of $0. Plus food.
So here you are on this website. You like being outdoors. But do you really really really like being outdoors? Like, living there?
The answer is a mystery. The question is all possibility. With many blank spaces to fill in. I’m just looking for someone who is free, fit and crazy enough to think this is a good idea. If that description fits you, then by all means drop a dime and we’ll figure out the rest.
